Aspen Chromatography®
Dynamic simulation software for batch chromatography and chromatographic Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) processes
Aspen Chromatography is a comprehensive flowsheet simulator for the simulation and optimization of batch and continuous chromatographic processes. It allows engineers and scientists to model and understand the separation and purification processes normally found in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, fine chemical, and food product businesses. Aspen Chromatography is a core element of AspenTech’s aspenONE™ Process Engineering applications.
Features
- Rigorous, Rate-Based Chromatography Column Model
- Wide range of kinetic models, including transport dispersive, equilibrium dispersive, lumped pore, and general rate model
- Wide range of standard equilibrium/isotherm models that allow for either pure component or multi-component/competitive behavior
- Optional energy balance to account for non-isothermal behavior, conduction, heat loss, and wall effects
- Packaged Models for Simulated Moving Beds
- Flexible model permitting the study of other SMB variants such as Intermittent SMB, PowerFeed, ModiCon, and Thermal Gradient
- Rigorous dynamic simulation enabling the analysis of time-dependent internal and product compositions and steady-state True Moving Bed (TMB) mode for rapid process evaluation
- Cycle Management
- User can define any number of independently operated cycles, each containing any number of process steps
- Process steps can be controlled by timer or by monitored events
- Steps or ramped changes can be imposed on manipulated variables
- Parameter Estimation tools that allow engineers to fit the models against various types of experimental and plant data
- Rigorous Physical Properties through integration with Aspen Properties; it includes extensive databases of pure component and phase equilibrium data for a wide range of components
- Compatible with Aspen Plus Dynamics®, enabling the simulation of process equipment upstream or downstream of the chromatography column
- Compatible with Aspen Plus®, enabling users to export Aspen Chromatography flowsheets and use in steady-state mode inside Aspen Plus flowsheet models
Benefits
Aspen Chromatography is a proven, industry-standard solution for simulating SMB and TMB chromatography columns. Customers have recognized and reported:
- 25% reduction in recycle flow rates resulting in decreased processing costs
- 12-month reduction in development time compared to traditional lab-pilot-plant process scale-up
- Substantial improvements in extract and raffinate purities, resulting in higher process yields and improved profitability
- Improved process understanding by applying validated Aspen Chromatography models to explore the operating envelope of the process in less time with reduced danger and inconvenience to the real process
- Improved process design through testing of alternatives before committing to a fixed design
- Improved plant operations by deploying Aspen Chromatography models into plant operations using Aspen Simulation Workbook™ or Aspen Online Deployment™ to build open-loop decision support tools
